Since the amount of these games is growing month by month, most gamers with a pc will have tried one at some point this is not a bad assumption.When it comes to choosing a character or archetype as they are called in this game, you have to take into account two different things. The first is what is your style of game play and the second is which do you prefer player vs. environment or player vs.
All classes are allowed close combat attacks with a weapon and ranged attacks with a weapon, so if you are the sort of person who wants to rush in there and hit things, then go with a warrior or rogue simply because they get more combat skills. If you like to hold back and hit things from afar choose a mage or rogue and use that bow.
Be aware that grinding is not a very good way of going up the levels in this game. It is very quest based so if you are looking for a character that will go through enemies like a hot knife through butter you may not be using its skills very much. Does not mean you cannot have one, just that grinding is not going to be a major part of game play.
This game is unlike other mmos in some ways and very much like other mmos in others so take your time and explore this world.
